Pioneering Roots

Established in 1990 as Trees for Africa, we pioneered the nation's first integrated community greening and food gardening initiatives. Originally conceived as strategic interventions to address the systemic inequities of South Africa's past, these programmes have evolved into award-winning benchmarks for urban forestry and school nutrition - maintaining a legacy of impact that remains with our operations today.

1992

Nelson Mandela launched our first township greening programme in Alexandra Township.

1994

Launched EduPlant the first school gardening and nutrition programme in the country.

1996

Brought Bill Mollison, the pioneer and developer of permaculture to South Africa and ran the first PDC workshops.
