The Journey

How to Establish Your Environmental Legacy

A legacy bequest is one of the most powerful acts of conservation available to an individual. Here is how to make it count.

01

Reflect & Connect

Consider the environmental legacy you wish to leave. Perhaps it is the knowledge that ancient forests will grow where there were none, that communities will be fed by food gardens bearing your name, or that future generations will breathe cleaner air because of a decision you made today. Take time to identify the cause that resonates most deeply with who you are.

02

Seek Professional Guidance

Consult your attorney or estate planner to determine the most advantageous structure for your gift. A bequest to Food & Trees for Africa is fully deductible from your estate's dutiable value under Section 4(h) of the Estate Duty Act as we are an approved Public Benefit Organisation under Section 30 of the Income Tax Act. This eliminates both Estate Duty and Capital Gains Tax on that portion of your estate.

03

Share Your Intentions With Us

We would be honoured to hear from you. Reaching out before you finalise your will allows our team to discuss how your gift can be channelled most effectively into broad environmental restoration, community food security or a specific programme that carries personal meaning for you. We hold all such conversations with complete discretion.

04

Formalise & Preserve Your Legacy

Have your attorney formally document the bequest using our registered details. We recommend providing FTFA with a copy of the relevant clause rather than the full will, so that we can acknowledge your extraordinary generosity and ensure your wishes are fulfilled with the utmost care and integrity when the time comes. You will join a remarkable circle of individuals whose love of nature outlives them.

Suggested Will Wording

“I give and bequeath [the sum of R___ / ___% of the residue of my estate] to Food & Trees for Africa, NPC Registration: 1991/001061/08, PBO Number: 130004520, to be applied toward its environmental restoration and community food security mission.”

Please have a qualified South African attorney review and adapt this wording to suit your specific testamentary intentions and estate structure.
